Three very different things get called an outdoor fireplace, and repair or replace resolves differently for each. One is a site-built masonry firebox with a real flue, repairable more or less indefinitely because every part of it can be replaced in kind. Another is a manufactured metal firebox set inside a masonry or framed enclosure, an appliance with a finite service life and model-specific parts. The third is a decorative surround built around a gas burner pan, where the burner is the appliance and the masonry around it is furniture.
Have the quote name which one you own before it names a price. Rebuilding the enclosure around a manufactured firebox whose panels are no longer made spends the money on the wrong half of the problem. Tearing out a sound site-built firebox because its finish looks tired is the opposite mistake. If nobody will commit in writing to identifying the construction, you are funding a guess, so ask what evidence settled the question. Outdoor units disguise what they are made of more effectively than indoor ones do.
Deciding what to do now and what can wait a season
An outdoor feature usually presents several needs at once, and they are not equally urgent. Anything that sheds water comes first: the crown or coping across the top, the cap, the mortar wash where the chimney meets its shoulders, and the drainage carrying rain away from the base. Every other defect on the list keeps worsening while water keeps arriving, so top work protects the value of whatever you spend after it. Firebox refractory follows, since it is what stands between flame and the structure holding it.
Cosmetic items wait without penalty: staining, fine lines in joints that are still tight, a tired hearth surface, decorative finishes. Timing deserves a decision of its own. Wind-driven rain runs roughly from June into November, so top and joint work is better booked ahead of that stretch than inside it, and open masonry should not sit uncovered through it. Ask what the schedule assumes about weather, and ask how partly finished work gets covered overnight when the job runs more than one day. Get that answer before a deposit changes hands.

Backyard fireplaces are rarely standalone. They sit inside outdoor kitchens, share a slab with counters and appliances, and often carry a gas line, a lighting circuit, or both. Reaching the firebox can mean lifting a counter section, pulling veneer, or disconnecting something that belongs to another trade entirely. Decide in advance who owns each of those steps, because the gap between two scopes is where a project stalls and where the surprise invoice comes from. Write the boundary into the scope document rather than leaving it in a conversation nobody recorded.
Landscape is the item forgotten most often. Say who protects and restores the surrounding hardscape, planting, and irrigation heads, since masonry work is heavy and the route to the fireplace crosses all of it. The gas connection deserves the same clarity, because masonry and venting sit in one scope while the burner, valve, and controls sit with people who work on gas daily.
