Deciding whether fireplace glass doors are worth buying
Glass doors are one of the few fireplace purchases a homeowner makes on looks and then lives with functionally. They change how the opening behaves once the fire is out, they interact with how the fireplace was built, and near the water they age at the speed of their hardware. The decision is not really whether doors are good. It is which job you want them doing, and whether your firebox leaves you a free choice.

Glass doors earn their place mainly when the fire is out, closing off the opening so conditioned air stops leaving through the flue and humid air stops arriving through it. Doors do less than people expect during an active burn, and on a factory-built fireplace they have to be the doors listed for that firebox rather than a generic set.
What the doors are actually doing
Two different jobs get bundled into one purchase. The first is what happens while a fire is burning, and there the doors do less than a showroom display suggests, because most open fireplaces are meant to be run with the glass panels open and the mesh screen drawn across. Glass standing in front of an active fire blocks a share of the radiant heat that was reaching the room, and door makers generally write their own operating instructions around burning with the panels open. The second job is the one that actually justifies the purchase.
That second job starts once the fire is out. A fireplace opening with nothing across it is a hole between the room and the outdoors, and it works in both directions. In cooler weather the room loses conditioned air up the flue. Through the long humid stretch of the year the trade runs the other way, and warm damp air carrying the smell of old soot arrives in the room instead. Doors do not seal that opening, but they slow it down considerably, and that is the honest case for buying a set.
The split that decides everything, masonry or factory-built
Before comparing any two sets of doors, work out which kind of firebox you have. A masonry firebox is brick or refractory laid in place, with a masonry chimney standing above it. A factory-built firebox is a steel unit with a metal flue running inside a framed chase, common in homes built here in recent decades. From the room the two can look much the same once a surround and a mantel are on, so this is worth settling rather than assuming from appearance.
The distinction matters because a factory-built fireplace is a listed appliance, tested and approved as a complete assembly. Doors fitted to one have to be the doors its manufacturer lists for that model, and a generic universal set is not a substitute. Glass changes how heat sits inside the firebox, which is exactly what the original testing accounted for. On a masonry firebox there is far more freedom, and the questions become fit, hardware, and how the frame fastens. If a quote for a factory-built unit does not name the door model, ask about that before anything else.
Doors for a fireplace nobody lights
Plenty of fireplaces here are never lit, and the owner is buying doors to deal with smell, insects, and the sense that the living room connects to the outdoors through a masonry pipe. On an unused fireplace doors work in their strongest role, because no burning performance is being given up to get the benefit. Set the expectation at improvement rather than elimination. A hinged door in a steel frame is not an airtight closure and was never built to be one, so anyone promising a sealed hearth is describing some other product.
The competing purchase works from the other end of the system. A damper that seals at the top of the flue closes the opening where humid outside air enters, so the whole column stays drier instead of only the room staying separated from it. Decide between them on the problem you actually have. Doors are hardware you look at every day and they change how the hearth reads in the room, while a flue-top seal is invisible from the sofa and does nothing about the appearance of a dark opening in the wall. Owners who may burn again often want both.
Doors, draft, and a fireplace that smokes
Doors get recommended as a cure for a fireplace that pushes smoke back into the room, and sometimes there is something behind that recommendation. An opening that is large relative to the flue serving it can be more than the flue can pull, and reducing the effective opening is a recognized way of bringing the two back into proportion. A smoke guard fitted across the top of the opening does that directly and with very little hardware. Doors can do it as well, though only where the door maker and the fireplace both allow operating with the panels partly closed.
The risk is buying doors to quiet a symptom whose cause sits somewhere else entirely. Smoke returning to a room can also mean a restricted flue, a damper that no longer opens fully, a house held under negative pressure by its exhaust fans, or a stack finishing too low for what surrounds it. Not one of those improves because glass went on the front. Have the cause identified first. If the answer really is opening size, doors become one option among several and you get to choose on looks.
Hardware that survives this air, and what the quote should say
Salt-bearing air is hard on small moving parts, and a door set is mostly small moving parts. Hinges, latches, handle springs, and the fasteners holding the frame all corrode faster within reach of the ocean than the same parts would inland, and the humidity keeps working on them the whole year round. Ask what the hardware is made of rather than what the finish looks like, because a plated steel hinge under a dark coating and a stainless hinge photograph identically and then age nothing alike.
A quote worth comparing names the door model, the glass type, and the way the frame attaches, whether it sits against the face of the fireplace or inside the opening. It should say what happens to the existing screen and damper, who carries responsibility for fit if the opening is out of square, and whether anything is being drilled into a stone or tile surround. Settle any leak, any sweeping, and any damper work before the doors go on, since doors sit in front of all of that work.
